Join the Bangs Brigade!

Bangs are the most adorable thing you can ever do to your hair. And there's so many ways you can wear them: curly, wavy, poker straight, side bangs.... you can easily find a style that will suit your hair/face. I love the late 60's bangs because they don't look perfect and have these girly/sexy vibe to them. Of course my bangs icons have to be these ladies: Françoise Hardy, Jane Birkin and Brigitte Bardot

I cut my bangs recently (i was letting them grow out) and realized that i was quite aware of my hair quircks these time. So i thought i would share some tips. In case someone with curly/wavy hair wants to give bangs a try!

 

These are my bangs au naturel as in not straightened. I like that look but i spent the day running errands in the rain and i thought showing you guys my natural texture would be more helpful anyway.

I cut them so they would stay right above my eyebrows. And i like to swipe the to the side when i have my hair up because i think it looks better (and i can pretend i have a pixie cut).

Tips

1. Know your hair. It's really important that you consider your hair's texture and volume not only when it's styled but how it looks like when it gets wet or something. It's really hard to keep the frizz away from curly and wavy hair so you need to be prepared. My hair is wavy all around with some curls and it gets frizzy a LOT. My hairdresser always cut my bangs longer so they would curl. Funny fact: the hair on top of my head hardly has any waves so my bangs would always be huge. Don't be afraid to talk to your hairdresser and tell him/her how your hair works. 
2. Don't forget the volume. As i said before think about the volume too. My hair has a lot f body so i couldn't get a block fringe (i would have to style it everyday) so my bangs are a lot choppier to reduce volume.
3. Feed that hair. Because bangs tend to get messy quickly if you need to style them more often then the rest of your hair try to keep them healthy. If you have wavy/curly hair it's likely to be dry so you know you need to keep the moisture locked. If your hair is dry but it's damaged hidrating it won't be enough you need to give it protein. Don't worry about spending a lot of money in treatments. I've been using a homemade mask with eggs and olive oil and it works great!
4. Try different styles. Textured hair tends to be more versatile that very straight hair so don't be afraid to experiment with your bangs. Swipe the to the side and see how it looks.
5. Shelter them. If you straighten your bangs beanies and hats will become your best friends when the weather sucks. It's a great preventive measure instead of carrying a straightener in your bag. If your bangs get messed up in your sleep wear a silk scarf as a headband.

Winter Favorites

 Hello! Here's a few things I've been loving this winter.

I'm not the most sweet loving person. But this tea is amazing! I like it strong otherwise just tastes water with a bit of vanilla.

 My skin is pretty average with a few patches of dryness that get worse during the cold months. This bodyshop moisturizer isn't too heavy but it keeps the patches away without overpowering the rest of my face.

 I've been loving nail polishes. I've never been a glitter type of girl but i've been loving shimmery everything this season so gold glitter is a party must in my opinion. The lipstick is Catrice 170 Work after wine and it's a very pretty mulberry color.

My favorite acessorie has to be this brown leather backpack (that used to belong to my mom). It holds a lot of stuff and it's really useful for rainy days. Everything stays dry and it's very pratical to hold your umbrela.

Winter sweaters! Right now my favorite one is an oldie. I've had it since i was 12 and it still fits amazing. It's oxblood and has a turtleneck (perfect combo).



And of course my favorite holiday song :)

1. What inspired you to begin blogging?

I started blogging to vent all my fashion/beauty thoughts. It's entertaining and i don't bother my friends (which are mostly male) with constant fashion topics. I still bother them though. Just not as much ahah.

2. How would you describe your personal style?

It depends on my mood I guess. I tend to like clothes and acessories that look dainty but also look like they could hurt you (think late 60's/ 70's flower child with a leather jacket full of spikes)

3. What is the meaning behind your blog's title?

My first blog was called "Yellow is cool". I like the idea of pretty pastel colours being described as cool instead of "pretty".

4. What is your nationality/ethnic background?

 I'm Portuguese. But my paternal grandfather was dutch and my grandmother was african. I hear we might have some irish in the family as well.
5. If you could only go on one website again for the rest of your life, which website would it be?

6. What do you do for fun besides blog?

I really love drawing. Illustrastion is another dream job of mine.

Best of Fall: Tights

I went to Primark yesterday to buy some 'basics'.
Ended up with 2 pairs of sheer tights (infused with aloe vera - curious to see how that works), 2 pairs of thick black tights (i love these primark tights, honestly they're 3€ and the quality is amah-ziiiing) and a pair of golden sparkly ones (new year's eve anyone?) also a classic pair of sheer tights with polka dots (you can't have too may of these - specially because they rip like crazy).

Eu fui à Primark ontem comprar umas "necessidades".
Acabei com 2 pares de collants transparentes (com uma infusão de aloe vera- estou curiosa para ver como é que isso funciona), 2 pares de collants pretas opacas (adoro estas collants da rimark, honestamente só custam 3€  e a qualidade é incríveeeeel) e um par de collants com brilhantes dourados (ano novo?) e por fim um clássico par de collants transparentes com bolinhas (nunca se tem demasiados pares destes, especialmente porque eles se rasgam em 5 segundos).

Oxblood velvet skirt

I got this beauty today from the very popular online store ROMWE. It was my first purchase there and everything went great. It took less then 2 weeks and it was well packaged in a zipped plastic bag.
I can already tell it's going to be a winter stable. The quality is much better than i hoped for. In the site the skirt is described as "crimson metallic skirt" but it's definitely a velvet blend material. The elasticated waist is very thick and tight so i don't think it's going to get loose anytime soon! I got it in a small size and i'd say it's pretty true to size.
It cost me around 20€ (with a coupon) which is much cheaper then the alternatives i was considering.

Eu recebi esta beleza hoje, vinda do popular site de roupa online ROMWE. Foi a minha primeira compra de lá e correu tudo bem. Demorou menos de duas semanas a chegar, vinha bastante bem embrulhada num pacote de plástico zipado. Já consigo perceber que vai ser um básico de outono. A qualidade é muito melhor do que etsava à espera. No site descrevem a saia como "saia metálica vermelhão" mas é definitivamente um tecido tipo veludo. O elástico na cintura é grosso e apertado por isso acho que não vai alargar nos próximos tempos!  Eu comprei um tamanho small e diria que os tamanhos são bastante correctos. Custou-me cerca de 20€ (com um cupão) o que é bastante mais barato que as alternativas que estava a considerar.

OOTD (it's getting really hard to find nice light to take pictures around my house, bear with me!)
So i think this skirt can pretty much go with anything. I paired it with my favorite combo so far this fall. A vintage white woolen sweather (from my mom) and my old H&M leather cropped jacket.  I'm wearling basic black tights and black canvas shoes. My only piece of jewlery is this awesome spiked (the spikes remind me of fossilized teeth) bracelet from claire's.

Eu acho que esta saia basicamente vai bem com tudo. Eu combinei-a com uma camisola branca de lã vintage (da minha mãe) e o meu velho casaco de cabedal da H&M. Estou a usar collants pretas básicas e sapatos tipo vans pretos. A minha única peça de joalharia é esta pulseira de picos (que me lembram dentes fossilizados) da claire's.

I had to include swatches because the colors are beautiful and the quality is pretty amazing!

 this is after 2 coats, as you can see it has some golden shimmer to it and some pink hues. I tried it on top of a burgundy polish and it became this amazing deep shimmery red color. perfect for a christmas party.

I used 3 coats and it's still a bit sheer (in direct light) but i like that sort of subtle glitz.

I need to work on better ways of showing you guys stuff, hopefully you'll see them better in OOTD's which i plan on start doing more often. Also if you want any reviews on the polishes or the marilyn treatment let me know. xx

I'm so much in love with the new Topshop collection Witching Hour
The nu-witch look isn't exactly new on the fashion scene but i think they managed to put together some great pieces (not over studded or spiked) with great colors and textures.

I gotta say my favorite one is probably the skeleton dress. I love the sheer skirt and the sort of baroque embroidery (also that flapper cut). It's by Tee and Cake which had a very famous skeleton bodycon dress already but i feel like this one is the "grown up" version. Also those brocade tights would look so badass with any outfit (I would pair them with the skirt and shirt next to them). I also think that the fact that topshop included some fun halloweenish acessories like the devil head band is super adorable and gives the collection an extra coolness.

Tenho a dizer que a minha peça favorita é provavelmente o vestido esqueleto. Adoro a saia transparente e o bordado estilo barroco (e também o corte à flapper). É da marca Tee and Cake que já tinha um vestido esqueleto estilo bodycon muito famoso mas eu sinto que este é a versão "adulta". As collants com bordado também são um favorito, quão incrível iam ficar com qualquer oufit? (eu usava-as com a camisa e a saia ao lado delas no set) Também acho que o facto da Topshop ter incluído acessórios divertidos com uma vibe halloweenesca, como a bandolete com cornos, é super adorável e dá uma extra coolness à colecção.

Long haired vixens

 Three of my favorite girls which happen to be my hair icons as well. I love super long hair that even when cut manages to look huge anyway (Kaya Scodelario's hair only got to "boob-lenght" recently but somehow i always imagined her hair longer that in reality). Not only these ladies rock the straight/wavy/curly hair perfectly but also they always choose lovely colors. I loved Lana del Rey's auburn-dark brown transition. Since i have a similar colour to her "blonder" days it got me thinking about going darker. I'm not so sure about her black hair right now (seems to make her washed-out) but with full make up she looks like 40's movie star. Sky is also pretty bold with the longest hair of the bunch and she rocks dark roots like no one!

Nostalgic Inspiration

Hi everyone! Around this time of the year I always get the urge (as most of you girls i'm sure) to burn my entire wardrobe and buy everything new. But right now i'm loving a lot of stuff i actually used wear when i was younger. And some of the trends i've been spotting (not necessarily from 2012 fall/winter) have made me feel somehow sort of nostalgic.

Olá a todos! Por volta desta altura do ano eu tenho sempre um sentido de urgência (como a maior parte das meninas há de saber) em queimar todo o meu guarda-roupa e comprar um monte de peças novas. Mas por agora estou a adorar uma data de coisas que na realidade eu costumava usar quando era mais nova. E algumas trends que tenho visto (não necessariamente do Outono/Inverno 2012) têm me feito sentir algo nostálgica.

I loved this make up. The bright eyes and soft pink lips reminded me of my first attempts at make up (not that i improved much). I love the mermaid vibe with the pastel colors and the 'eye-bling'.

Adorei este look de maquilhagem. Os olhos brilhantes e os lábios cor de rosa claro lembraram-me as minhas primeiras tentativas com maquilhagem (que não melhoraram muito mais). Adoro a vibe de sereia com os tons pastel e os cristais nos olhos.

70's inspired beauty look

I love everything about the 70's even though it's not true nostalgia because i wasn't even alive back then .
I will definitely try this look with the purple lip (since it's another trend i'm loving this fall).

Adoro tudo relacionado com os 70's, apesar de não ser verdadeiramente nostalgia porque nem sequer tinha nascido nessa altura. Vou definitivamente experimentar este look com os lábios roxos (já que é outra trend que estou a adorar para este Outono).

 

Body - con and sneakers
This one has been around for a long time. Body-con dresses and skirts with converse all star shoes. A few years ago i had 10+ pairs of sneakers and i would wear them with skirts mostly. Now only wear skirts with 'real' shoes. But i really wanna get back to my sneakers. Vans mostly. I'm not really a fan of converse all star. I'm not really a Blake Lively fan either but i must admit those two together look great.

Esta já anda por aí há algum tempo. Vestidos e saias com silhueta body-con emparelhados com ténis converse all star. Há uns anos atrás eu tinha mais de 10 pares de ténis e usava-os a todos principalmente com saias. Agora só uso saias com sapatos 'a sério'. Mas ultimamente quero mesmo regressar aos meus ténis. Que são na maioria vans. Não só fã de converse all star. Também não sou fã da Blake Lively mas tenho de confessar que os dois juntos ficam muito bem!

Skye from Terra Nova TV series
I just finished watching the season 1 and i'm so sad it got canceled. Not because it was a good show (trust me it wasn't) but i won't be able to watch the lovely Allison Miller playing Skye. She had the most perfect natural curls and a really cool sporty/survivalist style. Much like the teenage me (except I hated my curls back then). I don't know how to explain it even though it's the same sort of style people wear on other sci-fi shows Skye just seems to add a cool element to it. Maybe that white shirt she wore on the first episode :)

Acabei agora de ver a 1ª temporada e estou tão triste que tenham cancelado a série. Não porque era um bom programa (acreditem não era) mas agora não vou poder ver a adorável Allison Miller interpretar Skye. Ela tinha os caracóis naturais mais perfeitos e um estilo desportivo/natureza bastante cool. Muito à semelhança do meu "eu" adolescente (excepto que eu odiava os meus caracóis). Não se bem como explicar porque é o mesmo estilo de roupa que as personagens usam em séries de ficção científica mas a Skye acrescenta qualquer coisa de especial ao seu estilo. Talvez a camisa branca que usou no primeiro episódio :)

BackpacksNow that's some real nostalgia. I wore back packs until 2nd year of college. Expensive eastpaks and whatnot. Much like my sneaker obcession this was my other 'juvenile' obcession which i never thought i would leave behind. But i've been seeing this really cool black numbers. All faux leather and studs. I would consider a brown one but since you're already making a statement with a back pack why not go all out?

Agora sim, nostalgia a sério. Eu usei mochilas até ao 2º ano da faculdade. Eastpaks caras e não sei quê. Tal como a minha obsessão com ténis esta era a minha outra obsessão 'juvenil' que nunca pensei abandonar. Ma ultimamente tenho visto estes exemplos pretos incríveis. De cabedal e com tachas. Eu até considerei uma castanha mas já que estamos a fazer um statement com uma mochila porque não elevar tudo ao máximo?

#1 Fall Wishlist

Even though it still feels like summer i've been checking some new collections (or not) and there's some stuff i'm loving right now!
Black lace kimonos- even though they don't offer much protection against the cold i think they would be a great light jacket for me this season. so easy to dress up or wear with a casual outfit.
studded shorts- yes high waisted black distressed shorts with spikes. cliche much? yes but they're amazing!
studded loafers- i know everything will be studs and spikes this season. I still love it but i'm liking the pieces with the subtle details like these shoes with studs at the back.
biker boots- always a classic.
lilac hair -  i'm thinking about ditching my pink ends for some lilac. what do you guys think?
baby blue dress - doesn't quite seem to fit in this set. I tried it the other day and found it so sweet i couldn't resist to add it here.

new bag - i like this style. the grey jersey material gives it a cool edgy vibe.
comme des fuckdown* beanie - i just love the brand. It's really smart and cool and i like the message it stands for. Also A$ap Rocky usually sports clothing from this brand and he's the dopest rapper fashionwise.

So Tropicana

Yes I know! Besides the fact that i haven't blogged in ages my first post after the summer hiatus (so many things happened and i'm really sorry!) is an ode to the tropical trend that has been going on. It's just that i love it so much ahah and I plan on taking it to fall season if possible. Above is a selection of my favorite items and outfits and below is my take on the trend.

Sim eu sei! Além de não ter postado nada há séculos o meu primeiro post no blog depois desta pausa de Verão (aconteceu tanta coisa e peço mesmo desculpa!) é uma ode às peças com uma vibe tropical que se tem visto por aí. É que eu gosto tanto desta trend! Ahah e planeio levá-la para o Outono se possível. Em cima é uma selecção das minhas peças favoritas e em baixo um outfit de como interpreto esta trend.

I kinda felt this sort of pirate vibe in my acessories was apropriate.
Eu senti que esta vibe mais ao menos pirata nos meus acessórios era apropriada.

I love all about this trend. The fact that it's floral (i love my florals i'm sure you can tell) and the vintage vibe. I inserted a Lana del Rey picture because she was one of the first (celebrities) that i saw rocking this trend. And because just looking at her reminds me of Holidays in Havana in the 60's ha!

Adoro tudo nesta trend. O facto de ser basicamente floral (adoro os meus florais de certeza que já repararam) e a vibe vintage. Eu inseri a Lana del Rey na imagem porque ela foi uma das primeiras celebridades que vi a arrasar com esta trend. E porque só olhar para ela me lembra de umas férias em havana nos anos 60 ha!

Heat Wave

It's been hard dealing with this intense weather lately! In Lisbon we had our hottest day yesterday (40ºC) and let me tell you guys it was so NOT funny. I spent the day reaching for the most refreshing (if one can say so) clothes that i could find and eventually i got dressed in chiffon h&m shorts from last year's collection (featured on this fashion set) and a cropped tee. So much better. So i put together a set including all my favorite silhouettes and fabrics for crazy hot days.
Chiffon, lace, crochet sheer tops are a must for me. With cut outs, open back, no sleeves, cropped... you know trying to be as naked as possible without going out wearing only wearing a bikini! Shorts are great too i find them better then skirts for this kind of weather strangely. Also from a fashion point of view if you're wearing a crazy sheer top shorts will make the outfit more casual!

Tem sido difícil lidar com este calor instenso ultimamente! Em Lisboa tivemos o nosso dia mais quente ontem (40ºC) e deixem que vos diga não foi NADA divertido. Eu passei o dia à procura das minhas roupas mais frescas e eventualmente acabei a vestir uns calções de chiffon  da colecção da H&M do ano passado e uma -shirt tipo cropped. Muito melhor. Inspirada por isso criei um set que inclui as minhas silhuetas e tecidos favoritos para dias incrivelmente quentes.
Chiffon, renda, croché e tops transparentes são ua necessidade para mim. Com aberturas de ombros, costas abertas, sem mangas, cropped... vocês sabem, tentar estar o mais nua possível sem sair à rua só de bikini! Calções são óptimos também! Eu acho-os mais confortáveis e frescos que saias para este tipo de tempo curiosamente. E de um ponto de vista mais fashion eles tornam um top incrivelmente transparente muito mais casual!

how i wore my hair most of the week: loose side french braids / sweet gummies that my dad got me (yum) / random blackout on my street / new purchase: lip and cheek dome from Lily Cole's make up line for Bodyshop / straight hair (for the first time in a few weeks) / wearing my light denim jacket for the first time this year (with a pink floyd tee) summer's here. / pastel yellow toes / a tee i liked in Zara (that could be easily done by myself but oh well.

The first time i'm really confused about a nastygal item. Not sure if i hate it or if i just find it super weird. I'm all for body harnesses  but this is like... a shirt harness? Maybe if it was styled with another outfit without so much going on? I. just. don't. know.

A primeira vez que fiquei mesmo confusa em relação a uma peça da Nastygal. Não sei se a odeio ou acho apenas super estranha. Adoro arnêses de corpo mas isto é tipo... um arnês em forma de camisa? Talvez combinado com um outfit diferente mais simples? Eu. não. sei.

Flatforms: best of both worlds.

 

Flaforms are definitely a love/hate type of shoe. I just read somewhere that the only good thing about them is that they don't hurt you like heels when you take them for a night out. Even though that is true because they are mighty confortable i have to disagree because i just love them. Ever since the Prada Platform brogues i've been wanting a pair. I just can't decide what kind of flatform i want. Of course the classic black shoe would be a great staple but i've recently been loving flatform sandals (might be the summer getting close) and the flatform sneaker!

Flatforms são definitivamente um tipo de sapato que se ama ou odeia. Eu li algures que a única coisa boa nelas é que não magoam os pés como saltos altos quando os levam para sair à noite. Apesar disso ser verdade porque elas são incrivelmente confortáveis eu tenho de discordar porque eu simplesmente adoro-as. Desde que a Prada lançou as plataformas tipo brogues que eu quero arranjar um par para mim. Mas eu não consigo decidir que tipo de flatform quero! Claro que o clássico sapato preto seria um óptimo staple mas recentemente estou a adorar sandálias plataforma (talvez seja do Verão a aproximar-se) e ténis plataforma!

My favorites. I think flatform sandals are so girly and youthful, more than a kitty heel or a wedge sandal in my opinion. I would probably buy a black pair because i feel like they're fresh for summer and i would totally wear them with black tights in the winter.

As minhas favoritas. Eu acho que sandálias plataforma são tão femininas e jovens, mais do que um salto pequeno ou sandálias de cunha na minha opinião. Eu provavelmente compraria um par preto porque sinto que é refrescante para o verão e podia usá-las com collants pretas no Inverno.

I think flatform sneakers are so cool looking (even though they always remind me of Baby Spice from Spice Girls ahah).
I love them with interesting details like spikes or different fabrics like velvet. The creepers aren't exactly sneakers but i had to put them somewhere, they're the classic flatform! And i love these new lilac ones. Might just buy them instead of the actual sneakers!

Eu acho que ténis plataforma são tão "cool" (apesar de me lembrarem sempre a Baby Spice das Spice Girls ahah). Eu adoro-os com detalhes interessante scomo tachas ou tecido diferente como veludo. Os creepers não são exactamente ténis mas eu tinha de os colocar algures, são a plataforma clássica! E adoro este novo par lilás. Secalhar comprava-os em vez dos ténis verdadeiros.
